On June 13th 2009 at 12:01 am EDT, face book is making it available to have a personalized URL for your page (e.g facebook.com/your name.)”
This is very big news, and is being blogged and discussed all over the Internet Marketing Community. Even though Twitter and Myspace already have this capability, the world is abuzz about Facebook and their launching of this new vanity URL campaign.
The requirements, however, are interesting; your page must be live on Facebook prior to May 31st and you need to have a minimum of 1000 fans as of the May 31st cut-off date. 1000 fans??! I think this is a bit high of a number to require, and its obvious that this would only favor big businesses. So what about the smaller companies who are using Facebook as a marketing and branding tool so they grow and build their audience? It seems Facebook is doing what many expected, and are selling themselves out to the Corporate World! This was also apparent in new commercials broadcasted by Sprint and Panasonic, where both companies give a shout out to Facebook as a platform where they can view their new products.
Facebook is also reserving names in advance for key journalists and large businesses to assure that there isnt impersonators and competitors scooping up these URL names. Again, another strategical aid for Corporate America!! So i guess its safe to say Facebook has entered the evil world of Corporate Politics!
