Avatar: Symbolism for Living Green or for Wasting It (Green) on Movies...
Headlines/News, General Add commentsAs soon as I heard James Cameron introduce this film a couple years back, I thought, wow, finally a cgi film that may not suck! Then I saw the trailer for it, and I became even more excited! Not just for its groundbreaking and innovative look and concept, but for the fact it also seemed to actually be a CGI movie with a thought provoking storyline.
The first hour into it- I was amazed. Was in love! Visually stunning, conceptually provocative. It was as if I was in a trance! Had fallen in love for the first time! My girlfriend, sitting to my left, noticed me sitting on the edge of my seat, with a plastered smile for atleast the first hour. I observed everything and could not be bothered. I was in awe of so many things going on- from the constant metaphors for nature conservancy and peace,to watching Jake Sully (lead character) trek through the landscapes of the Pandorian flora and fauna and disciplining wild banshees. It was also intersting learning about the culture and values of the Na'avi people of the Pandora Planet- an aboriginal clan of hunters and gatherers- and the deity they worship. Its safe to say I was totally engrossed in this film! Then it happened...
In comes what I dreaded most- the predictable and formualiac Hollywood curse to seemingly every cool CGI built film. The antagonist (who seemed like he belonged in that other horrible and expensive dissapointment of a film Gi Joe) represented the human invader, while the protagonist (Sully), the environmentalist radical. The entire last hour+ of the film was “Dances with Wolves” meets “Transformers II.” Stupid dialogue followed by annoying acting (most notably: Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana) made this movie self destruct.
Is it possible for a movie of this grandiose scale (250 million bucks!) to not actually suck?
Now all Im left thinking about is how that money could of been better spent on maybe like curing a small nation of its poverty? Perhaps providing a college scholarship to every eligible student in California? Seriously, in this global recession, should such movies be allowed? Where is the checks and balances in the film industry?
Let me know your thoughts!

Very cool graphics but the amount that is being spent on films these days is absurd and will continue to rasie movie ticket prices, and dvd sales! Independent films is true cinema, especially in this shitty economy! Such arrogance in Hollywood, pisses me off!~ -
